Plantar Fasciitis

Approximately 2 million people in the US are treated each year for plantar fasciitis associated pain; heel and foot pain. Many long distance runners, basketball players and nonathletic women tend to experience it the most.

Plantar Fasciitis is characterized by heel and foot pain, foot cramps and tired achy feet at the end of the day. Usually taking the first few steps after getting out of bed in the morning are the worst pain with plantar fasciitis and a common indicator that you may have it. Then after being active for about 5 minutes the pain goes away until the evening.

More common in females, distance runners and athletes.

Common Symptoms:

  • Arch or foot discomfort, specifically around the heel

  • Severe pain with the first few steps after getting out of bed in the morning

  • Walking, running or standing for long periods or long distances triggers discomfort

  • Tired or fatigued feet

  • Achy in the evenings

How do you get plantar fasciitis?

It can be caused by many different things: prolonged standing or running, weak foot muscles, misaligned and restricted tarsal bones, being overweight and arch supports. You may think that arch supports are helping your feet, but what they do is allow your feet to rely on something else to support that arch instead of your tarsal joints and foot muscles. So in essence you are potentially making the problem worse by only relying on arch supports. The other causes are things that can be helped by limiting overuse injury, proper joint mobility of the tarsal bones and working on the supporting foot muscles.
