Occipital Neuralgia

Headaches are a very common complaint with 18%-23% of Americans experiencing them each year. There are many different types of headaches that we are very experienced in treating. Dr. Curtis Reinkemeyer has helped many patients in Lees Summit, with many different types of headaches get relief through chiropractic care. This type of ‘headache’ is not as common as most other headaches, but they can share some common symptoms that could cause them to get misdiagnosed as another type of headache. This ‘headache’ mimicker is classified as a headache but it comes from upper neck dysfunction, occipital compression/translation and spastic suboccipital muscles irritating the occipital nerves that run up the back of your head.

This can mimic a headache, but presents slightly different.

Common Symptoms:

  • Pain at the base of the head that radiates about an inch or two from that area upward or just behind the ear on one side

  • Pressure at the base of the head on one side

  • Turning the head to the direction of pain can make it more noticeable

  • Tightness accompanied by pinpoint tenderness and a possible tender nodule due to muscle spasm

How can we help you?

  • We will take a thorough history, perform an examination and; if necessary, diagnostic imaging to complement a proper diagnosis

  • We will check the mobility of your joints in the area of concern for proper function

  • We will check for any soft tissue or muscular adhesions that may also be a contributing factor

  • We will then discuss the possible treatment options if you are a candidate for chiropractic care

The only way to know if you are a candidate for chiropractic care is to give us a call and schedule your consultation!
